The African Dwarf Frog (ADF) is a small, fully
aquatic frog that needs to live 100% of its lifetime in water. They are not
amphibious like most other frogs that spend part of their time on land and therefore
ADFs have no eyelids!
pidae are a family of primitive,
tongueless frogs. The thirty species in the family Pipidae are found in tropical
South America (genus
Pipa) and sub-Saharan
Africa (four other genera).
These frogs are exclusively aquatic and have numerous morphological
modifications befitting their habitat. For example, the feet are
completely webbed and a
lateral linesystem is present. In addition, pipids possess highly modified ears and
vocal structures for producing and receiving sound underwater.
My ADF isn’t fully aquatic like you say they are…I keep catching him trying to get out of the tank!Every so often, someone will encounter a problem – their frog keeps
trying to exit the water. This is an indication that something,
somewhere, is amiss. Test the water to make sure that
ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels are where they should be (0/0/<40,
respectively). If the water quality is poor, sometimes frogs will try
to alleviate the discomfort by exiting the water (which is bad!).
Another reason is that the filter current may be too strong and the
frogs are trying to find a safe place. Whatever the problem is, make
CERTAIN that there is NO gaps for the frogs to escape out of the tank
and that the water quality, heater, filter, and other fish are all okay.
