Fluval Edge 20L by Niko

Hi folks!

My name is Niko, I am a french fellow who lives in Zagreb. Don't worry I didn't escape from my country just because of the last election in France
As my Croatian is very low, I prefer to write in English, I hope you do not mind for doing so.
I am a complete newbie in salt water and I just started a nano reef project on a customized fluval edge 20L.
The light is a DIY LED CREE 30W, the circulation pump is a NeWave 1000 and the filter is the original one.
The tank is 2 months old and everything is going fine: population is growing and parameters are stable. I change 3-4 liters of water each week.

For the time being, there is only some invertebrates and corals that came with the living rocks.
But now, I am thinking of introducing few shrimps and a maybe a small goby.

What kind of fish/shrimps will you recommand for such a small tank?
I heard about Thor amboinensis shrimps. Do you know maybe a place to find some?
I am also interested in soft coral to purchase. Any hints?

You can put mushrooms, Xenia, Kenya Tree, Zoe, zoanthus, euphiliu, maybe a small anemone and two of clown fish. Just use your imagination

Personally, I would broke that stones in smaller specimens and made imaginative reef.

Soft corals regarding, I can get you some kenya tree, I supose others will also contribute some softies to your nano...
Thors ould be good for this tank, and for the fish..I dont know, the only one that I can think of is that samll yellow goby..can't remember the name..damn...

Hello! I had a Fluval edge saltwater aquarium, I expirence many problems with lightening , and cleaning + implementing of corals ....nice tank but ....start with soft corals...good luck

@Che: Thanks for the advise about the stones I will think about breaking them into smaller pieces.
About clown fishes, don't you think 20 Liter is a bit to small for 2 of these?
If they are a bit territorial and jalous, the divorce will be terrible

@Delbi: Really proud fish indeed! But a bit too bit for my tank, maybe a Firefish goby?

What kind of light did you put inside Fluo? LED?

This is definitly too small tank for any other than the smallest fishes available... this one yellow guy would be quite enough I think, but i would definitly go for Thors..

@Blato: I had a fluo 50/50 as well but the amount a light was not sufficent enough.
So I made a DIY 11 x3W LED. The only problem for the time being is the cooling of the device...
I can only put half power but I will find a solution fot that.

By the way, anyone for a beer in town one of these days?

On picture of my Fluval, there are 2 fluo bulbs, first 50/50 13w marine and 8W 4000K  + 10 pcs of blue led noname from china, and it was ok, problem was opening top cover with all that lights, heating as well, but after I discovered that one pc ventilator with radius 12cm can cool tank down in no time and it cost only 30Kn in some computer shops. According kenyatree i had some but few days ago I had some works in tank and now is in bad condition. For LED cooling use alu led cooling plate and ventilator on top, most important is to conect LED with cooling plate properly.

as for the temp above normal, you will prolly have to open the top (at least while the lights are on) and let it breathe a bit more than in the winter... air conditioned surroundings are helpful too 

as someone already mentioned, you can put a PC fan above the lights/water to help it evaporate and hence cool down for few degrees. Any computer shop will have them, the bigger ones (in diameter, like 120mm or 92mm) are quieter than smaller ones, and you can purchase the device called " zalman fanmate" which you connect between the fan and PSU to control the rpm-s and the noise

Anyway I bought 2 fans to cool down the heat sink but they are small and noisy. I don't have enough space to put a 120mm under the Fluval edge hood...
The thing is that I don't know if there is enough light now (at half power) or too much (at full power) for my corals.
Discosomas seems to like shade as well as Xenia. Am I right?
While my algea (they look like a plant actually), seems to decay and becomes white if any light directly strikes them.

I dont know if you have lens on the LEDs but seems like the algae get burned if exposed directly to the beam, discosomas are generally bottom dwelling creatures that like shade/less light and will expand themselves accordingly... Xenia will be happy in almost every place but also with LEDs you never know if it gets burned ... should be fine in mid/bottom level...

for the computer fan(s) - if you cannot put bigger dia fan on/under the hood, noise the small ones make is pretty much what you get... you can try to slow them down a bit if the noise is too loud to be close to the tank, but usually with small dia fans thats pretty much it... noise, hiss and pitchfork in the brain  ...

OK, I will do as you said and post my requests here.

About the LED beam the problem is that my tank is really shallow (25cm) and therefore it is hard to find right spot for the species.

For the fan, I will change the voltage in order to slow them down a bit and try to improve the way to fix them to the heat sink.
